Mangudadatu's wife suffered 'most painful death'

February 03, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – The slain wife of Buluan vice mayor Esmael Mangudadatu "suffered a most painful death," according to a medico-legal officer from the National Bureau of Investigation. Taking the witness stand today, Dr. Ricardo Rodaje told Quezon City Regional Trial Court Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes that Jenalyn Mangudadatu must have suffered a lot. "It is evident that the victim died, cruelly, brutally and treacherously. She must have suffered a most painful death," said Rodaje, the doctor who autopsied Jenalyn's cadaver. During the bail hearing of Maguindanao massacre suspect Andal Ampatuan Jr., the prosecution panel presented photographs of Jenalyn's body in the early stage of decomposition. Rodaje said the victim's mangled body bore 17 bullet wounds, only one of which was not fatal. He also noted that there were three lacerations on the body. There was no indication that victim was raped, Rodaje added. During the cross examination by Ampatuan’s lawyer Sigfrid Fortun, Rodaje admitted that the clothes of Jenalyn were disposed of during the examination and were never preserved as evidence. Rodaje said it is not a practice at the NBI to keep such items since the office has no refrigeration unit. "The clothes were already stained with blood and they were already sticking to the corpse," Rodaje argued. Mangudadatu's wife was among the 56 people slain in the worst election-related massacre in the country.
